Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) is central to our Department and shapes how we teach, support, and work together.
We are committed to creating an environment where all students feel valued, respected, and able to thrive, regardless of background or identity. Our EDI Committee, made up of staff and student representatives, leads initiatives across key areas including gender equality, race equality, disability and wellbeing, LGBTQ+ inclusion, and widening access.
This commitment is recognised through our Athena Swan Silver Award, reflecting our sustained work to advance equality and foster an inclusive culture.
We Listen to You to Support Every Student
We recognise that our students join us from a wide range of educational pathways and diverse backgrounds, and we provide structured support to help you successfully transition to university-level study.
In Year 1, this is coordinated by our Head of Year and supported by dedicated Personal Development Advisors (PDAs), who work with small groups of students to provide academic guidance and pastoral support. You’ll also become part of a close-knit cohort, building strong peer networks through shared learning and social activities, including those run by the Andersonian Chemical Society.
Inclusivity is embedded throughout your learning experience, particularly in our teaching laboratories, which are designed to be flexible and accessible for students with a wide range of needs, including physical disabilities, long-term health conditions, and neurodiverse profiles. You’ll benefit from adaptable structures, trained and supportive staff, and clear guidance to help you build confidence. We work closely with the University’s Disability & Wellbeing Service to provide tailored support where needed.
Our approach to teaching is guided by our own internationally recognised research on inclusive education, from members of our dedicated Education, Research and Scholarship research theme, ensuring that inclusive teaching practices are evidence-based and continuously evolving.
Our staff are committed to ongoing professional development, undertaking regular training in inclusive teaching, assessment, and student wellbeing, with trained Mental Health First Aiders available to provide additional support for students when needed.
To ensure we continue to get it right, students play a key role in providing feedback and co-creating their learning experience, through mechanisms such as our Staff–Student Liaison Committee. This ensures that our teaching, support, and community continue to evolve in ways that reflect the needs and experiences of our diverse student body.
